What is Great Lakes Pilots?
We are a group of almost 100 pilots (and growing!) who communicate through the internet and plan fly-in's to places around the region, $100 hamburger runs, discuss flying and share a love of aviation
How do I Join?
It's simple! Just subscribe to our email mailing list and introduce yourself to the group. We don't charge dues or have any formal meetings.
Site not actively updated...
Due to a lack of time, I haven't been actively updating this website. We do however have over 125 people on our mailing list and many of the members are active on facebook. Join our mailing list by clicking the link above and keep in touch with many pilots in the region as we plan flying trips and other fun activites.
Studentpilot.com and Great Lakes Pilots Burke Lakefront Fly-in - June 20, 2009
Mark your calendars!
Reserve the planes if you rent!
It's that time of year again...
Burke Lakefront Fly-in (KBKL)
June 20, 2009
This originally started as an event from StudentPilot.com, but then grew to include Greatlakespilots.org and everyone is invited! Let's make this a huge event!
More details are available at: http://www.studentpilot.com/interact/forum/showthread.php?t=36945
So far, we have confirmed pilots coming from Ohio, PA, Massachusetts, Virginia, Maryland and Michigan.
This is the type of airport we should all be supporting and flying to when we can. Just like Meigs Field in Chicago, this airport is at risk for closing due to limited use. Luckily they hold the Cleveland Airshow there. The Cleveland Grand Prix is typically held there, but this year, they aren't doing it.
The date has been set for June 20th.
We usually try to meet at the airport between 11:00am and Noon, check out each others planes (There are some cool ones scheduled to be here this year!) and then head someplace to have lunch and swap flying stories. Then after lunch there are lots of options of things to do around downtown.
Options of things to do right next to the airport (walking distance):
Great Lakes Science Center
Goodtime 3 - Lake and River Cruise
Rock-n-Roll hall of Fame
Cleveland Browns Stadium . We might be able to arrange a tour.
USS Cod Submarine
This is usually a great time!
Everyone is welcome. Non-pilots can easily drive to the airport, while pilots can easily fly into this Class D airport.

Wood, Fabric and Tailwheel Fly-in at Lee Bottom Airport - September 27, 2008
Another great event to make sure you don't miss next year. Lee Bottom is a great 4000 foot grass strip on the southern edge of Indiana. Every year they do this fly-in which atracts some great old planes.
Here are some pics I took of this years event. Click Here

Wolf Run State Park - July 5-6
All I have to say is most of you missed a beautiful day/evening/night down at Wolf Run State Park this past weekend.
It was probably the busiest I've ever seen that airport too! Although most of the people weren't from Great Lakes Pilots (Gary Gembula did show up in his nice VERY nice plane! Thanks for pass over the campsite as you left, Gary, even the people in the boats on the lake were looking up at your nice plane!). Throughout the day and evening a total of 14 planes were in and out of this quiet little airport coming to check out the campsite and the area.
Joanna, myself and her Joanna's dog Xavier flew in Saturday morning and relaxed near the water for awhile before setting up camp and attempting to start a fire to cook lunch/dinner. besides only being able to find mostly wet wood, the lighter I brought to light the fire decided to stop working after a few strikes. I didn't have a backup. (oops!). A quick run up to the airport and there were some locals there who were running into town for some stuff and brought us back a lighter. We ended up enjoying a nice dinner after we got a roaring fire going. It was a nice clear and calm night to camp out in. The next morning we awoke early, cleaning up camp, had some breakfast and then made the flight home. I love flying early in the morning when it is so smooth and calm.
Here is a link to a video I made of my landing at Wolf Run. The video quality really stinks when you upload a video to YouTube, but it's not too bad. (The full AVI is very nice quality!) I just bought myself a little camera that clips onto my headset and a little DVR recording device that has an external audio input for the intercom audio (I'm making a new cable that will not have a MIC in it to eliminate the engine noise too). It works pretty good and records in DVD quality and the camera has a wide angle lens and will record in Widescreen mode. I still have some bugs to work out on many of the settings, but I'm sure you will be seeing more flying video's from me using this setup.

Website Redesign
We were long overdue for a redesign of the website. I decided to make it much simpler. On the website, you can join our email mailing list, submit any fly-in or other aviation related event information and get a list of upcoming events within our region.
